Long before Naples was a city — or even a concept — the Calusa people engineered one of the most sophisticated canal systems in pre-Columbian North America right here in Southwest Florida. The Naples Indian Canal, believed to be over 1,000 years old, was hand-dug by the Calusa to connect inland waterways and facilitate travel, trade, and fishing across the region's vast mangrove estuary. The Calusa were a powerful, sea-oriented people who never farmed — they fed an entire civilization through the extraordinary abundance of the Gulf Coast. This canal is one of the most tangible remnants of their presence in Collier County, and the Naples Historical Society has documented its history in fascinating detail.

Few landmarks in Florida carry the weight of the Naples Pier. Originally built in 1888 as a freight dock for steamships bringing supplies to the fledgling settlement, the pier has been battered by hurricanes, destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, and has stood as the symbolic heart of Naples through it all. Today's 1,000-foot concrete structure — rebuilt after Hurricane Irma in 2017 — is the fourth version of the pier, but its spirit hasn't changed. Fishermen still line the rails at dawn, families still gather at sunset, and the Naples Panorama site preserves a rich, photo-filled history of the pier's life through every era.
